Just a guess:
Make sure that you do not run into the libtiff incompatibility of older
hylafax version with libtiff 3.5.x.

Search the new HOWTO on www.hylafax.org and the mailing list arcvhives,
see also
http://www.hylafax.org/patches/tiff-3.5-interfaces.patch

AFAIK currnet CVS is automatically configured for all libtiff 3.4 and 3.5
