What version of HylaFAX are you using?
What version of libtiff?  (I think that SuSE 6.3 comes with libtiff 3.5.4)
Anyway, if you're using the HylaFAX that comes with SuSE, you'll need to
update it to support libtiff-3.5.x or downgrade your libtiff to 3.4.x

(I may be making a poor assumption here, because it does seem to be working
on ASCII files, but I never tested that when I had libtiff woes, so I don't
know if that's the story here or not.)
