Installing Hylafax --for Frantz and Canas

Dear Paul Franz and Carlos Canas:

I tried to contact you directly (by hitting Reply) but my message was
returned to me.

First, I wish to thank both Carlos Canas and you for your gracious help
with Hylafax. Thanks to the advice offered by both of you, I am now
close to being able to use Hylafax.

I downloaded all the Red Hat files Paul recommended, then followed
Carlos' instructions on how to use faxsetup.

Here is what I have installed:

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ rpm -qa |grep ghostscript
ghostscript-Both-5.50-9mdk
ghostscript-X-5.50-9mdk
ghostscript-fonts-6.0-2
ghostscript-6.01-1
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ rpm -qa |grep hylafax
hylafax-4.1beta2-3rh6
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ rpm -q libtiff
libtiff-3.5.5-2
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ rpm -q libtiff-devel
libtiff-devel-3.5.5-2
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ rpm -q mgetty-sendfax
mgetty-sendfax-1.1.21-6
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$
mgetty-sendfax-1.1.21-6

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ rpm -q mawk
mawk-1.2.2-3mdk
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$

With Hylafax finally installed correctly, I proceeded to Faxsetup.

1) I got the /bin/egetty missing message

2) I got a message telling me that the ghostscript 5.50 directory is
missing. Well, I uninstalled my Mandrake ghostscript 5.50 and
gostscript-fonts 5.50 files and installed the new ghostscript 6.0 and
ghostscript-fonts 6.0 files. They installed perfectly. I tested them on
printtool in DrakeX and by actually printing out the sample ASCII and
Postscript samples and a letter from Netscape. Everything works
perfectly.

Here is my ghostscript directory:

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ whereis ghostscript
ghostscript: /usr/bin/ghostscript /usr/share/ghostscript
/usr/man/man1/ghostscript.1
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 share]$ cd /usr/share/ghostscript
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 ghostscript]$ ls
6.01/ fonts/
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 ghostscript]$ cd 6.01
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 6.01]$ ls
examples/ lib/
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 6.01]$ cd ..
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 ghostscript]$ cd fonts

fonts]$

Everything seemed all right except for the ghostscript 5.50 "error". I
now proceeded to test Hylafax:

Should I run faxmodem for each configured modem [yes]?
/usr/sbin/faxmodem ttyS1

Done verifying system setup.
[root@adsl-77-233-178 sher]# sendfax -d phoneno /etc/hosts

[-m N] [-o #] [-p #] [-r] [-U] [-Ml=#,r=#,t=#,b=#] [-V #] files...
>out.ps
Default options: -f Courier -1 -p 11bp -o 0
Error converting data; command was "/usr/sbin/textfmt -B -f

</etc/hosts"
[root@adsl-77-233-178 sher]#

This is as far as I got. Am I almost there? What does that error above
mean?

Please remember that I am only interested in using Hylafax as a client
to send and receive faxes. Secondly, my system is an AMD K6-2 400, which
is usually translated to mean a 586, yet the setup program talks about a
686 installation. What does this mean, please? Can my system handle it?

All my thanks again to both of you and to several others who wrote in
but whose advice, for one reason or another, was not quite appropriate.

Benjamin
