I think it matters. It's important to recompile gcc for your actual OS
installation: from experience, gcc (and anything that is so involved
with the guts of your systems, like compilers) is sensitive to subtle
differences between what it was compiled on, and where it installed.
This is why the gcc instructions *say* to recompile it and install
on the system where you will use it.
