I understand your intention, and in theory it could eventual be possible 
to do that with hylafax. But that depends on how your modem sends
a stored fax to the pc. if it simulates an incomming fax-connection 
to do so, it could be possible to use faxgetty to get them.
But you'll have to tweak the configuration a bit, and i don't know how.

I don't think this is possible with hylafax without heavy tweaking.

yes, it is needed for receiving faxes, and yes it is started 
at boot up, but not by a script. It is started via init, which 
means it is listed in /etc/inittab. this is neede to make shure it
gets restarted if it dies.
and as you get the message from faxgetty about modem-locking,
you'll probaly find a line starting it in your inittab.

with hylafax i know of no straight forward way.
