Bad idea: com3 and com4 typically use the same IRQ's as com1 and com2
(IRQ 4 for com1/com3, IRQ 3 for com2/comr).  Invest in a real serial
card with more ports and better interrupt handling: take a look at the
various Linux discussion groups for recommended hardware.

If you have to use extra com ports the way you describe, look at the
rc.serial files and set it up to configure your ports correctly at
boot time to be /dev/ttyS0 for com1 through /dev/ttyS3 for com4.

In fact, why don't you set up HylaFAX on the modem you currently use?
