This problem with the configure script is running me gonzo: it occurs
with other non-GNU configuration scripts as well, such as the one in
ddd-3.1.6.

gcc-2.95 has other issues: the gcc complains, and g++ cannot compile,
the original "hello, world" script because it screams about "implicit
declarations" for the "printf" command. I'll have to set the
"-fpermissive" setting and try that: it's quite irritating to no
longer be able to compile perfectly reasonable code.
