Listening to rings from modem status && no answer

Hylafax v4.0pl1, running on SCO Open Server 5.02
with a Telebit WorldBlazer, Firmware LA7.05C.

Problem: the modem doesn't answer. This configuration has
worked reliably for over a year; I suspect the modem settings
may have gotten mangled, so I restored the modem configuration.
A faxstat -r shows it in the state "Listening to rings from modem"
before, during, and after a call. Modem LEDs indicate that it's
getting a ring signal. I have not changed the Hylafax config.
files since it used to work.

Here's a trace of the faxgetty startup:

Any help appreciated; please respond directly as I don't subscribe
