This is already one problem. cua/b is a traditionally UUCP used serial
port device. You should probably be using /dev/term/b, and making
absolutely certain that nothing is running on /dev/cua/b. Conversely,
if something is running on /dev/cua/b, nothing should be on /dev/term/b.

Sun's unfortunate vendor-delivered implementation of PPP has also been an
unfortunate problem, according to old reports.

What in the heck was *THIS* about?

Avoid Sun's PPP installation: use the freeware one from
       ftp://cs.anu.edu.au/pub/software/ppp
if that is a problem.
