Hmmmm. I ran into something like this when I told config.local not to
use the included copy of zlib, which confused the hell out of me. After
I let it use the included zlib, it came out OK.

No idea. Try the local zlib: you may also want my minor patch at
http://cirl.meei.harvard.edu/hylafax/patches/ to makek sure zlib
uses the same compiler as the HylaFAX itself.
