Try a modern version of egcs(1.1.2, http://egcs.cygnus.com/), the output
below indicates a broken compiler.

I do not know of any current rpms for Alpha-Linux, you should be able to
comiple from source 4.0pl2 with the egcs patch or the latest
beta(4.0pl2-rjc11).
