flexfax: hylafax won't receive data

hylafax version 4.0.6 (rpm dist)
redhat 4.2
hayes optima 28800 v.34/v.fc fax+voice

It answers...  fax recieves but gets NO data  it leaves tiff files empty

I have tried this on 4.0.7 aswell, and on three other systems, and with
two other modems.  I have read all docs and faq's and tried everything,
and NOTHING changes the operation whatsoever.

the WORST part is, it is gives the remote side a confirmation, and they
think the fax data got here, when in fact NOTHING does.

here is a trace:  its got some wierd things, and if anyone has any clues,
I really need to be able to get faxes.

I am at my wits end.  HELP!
