I think you missed the point; it is 100% ftp plus some additional features
for handling submission and second level authentication.  The problem is
that the browser cannot cope with the output of an abitrary compliant 
FTP server because it is relying on behaviour that is not specified
by the standard (and for which there are probably already a dozen variants
in real ftp servers - try talking to your local friendly(?) NT ftp server,
and if it looks sensible, issue the command "SITE DIRSTYLE" to put it into
the out of the box mode).
