Adaptive Answering and Getty's

Hello List

Is anybody successfully making use of adaptive answering?

I have Hylafax running on a number of boxes, some doing outgoing
only and some out and incoming faxes. All using Linux Debian ver
2.0 and 2.1.

Now I am trying to setup adaptive answering on a new box. Has
anybody got this working? After over 60 logged phone calls, I have
made no progress :-(

I have to basic problems:

1) Calling getty:

The Debian sets up symbolic links to getty-link, egetty-link and
vgetty-link to mgetty. However the default arguments supplied in
"GettyArgs" don't work and I suspect that they never will.

I have now tried "mgetty", "agetty" and I have had a look at
"gettyps" and a variety of combinations of GettyArgs. Nothing
wants to work. I get one of three things:

- The getty dies with an error code

- The call hangs up imediately, but the getty hangs around on the
receiving end 'till I kill it, or

- If the call is answered, but I get garbage on the line and when
I hang up the calling modem the getty hangs around on the
receiving end 'till I kill it.

If there is somebody out there who has this working, please let me
know, which "getty" program are you using and what GettyArgs
string do you use.

2) Making the modem do Adaptive answering.

The modem is a 56K Rockwell based Class 1 modem. Straight
sending and receiving of faxes seems to work well.

I did some tests and found that if I use minicom to answer the
modem, and I give it a factory reset AT&F1 then AT+FAE=1 and
then use ATA to answer an incomming call, it answers fax with fax a
fax handshake and data with a data handshake.

So I tried a setup

ModemSetupAACmd AT+FCLASS=0+FAE=1

This works for starting a data call but somehow the fax machine
hangs up during the handshake.

I think this one is not so easy to sort out. But there is no point in
trying to get it right if I can't the a data connection from faxgetty in
the 1st place!

If you have either of the above working for you, please let me know
how!

Thanks

Ian Forbes
