flexfax: how do I REMOVE a modem?

hello, I have looked all through the docs but can't seem to find how to
REMOVE  a modem from hylafax's modem pool. (but still keep it hooked up
for other things).
I have v4.0pl2 on FreeBSD. I have removed the FIFO and config file and
faxstat -s returns the right info ie the cuaD02 is not in the list of
modems and it doesnt try to dial out on it but I keep getting console
and mail messages that hylafax thinks the modem is weged.
any clues direction.. anything...
also I cannot seem to get MaxDials or MaxTries to change from the
default. I have put entries in the /var/spool/fax/etc/config file and
made a /usr/share/fax/sendfax.conf with these entries and even restarted
the whole machine and still no dice 12 tries is an awful lot.
