flexfax: New install, sendfax attempts fail w/Ghostscript error

I've looked thru docs and FAQ, found nothing that sheds light (for me!). 
Any explanations or troubleshooting advice much appreciated.

Running binaries from ftp.sgi.com under SCO Open Server 5.0.5.
Hylafax is 4.0pl1, ghostscript (also from ftp.sgi.com) is 2.6.2.
The command,

	sendfax -n -d phoneno <<EOF
	Hello, world.
	EOF

is accepted, but the job always fails.  Text in the spool/doneq file ends 
with 

status:Error: /typecheck in --restore--\
