I am not sure about standards and such, but I am pretty sure in the US
you can talk nicely to your phone company and they will allow you do
what you say, i.e. simulate multiple lines on a single line. I thought
this was how direct dialling through to an extension worked with PABX's.
I just presumed that the PABX could in turn map the same "extensions"
through to a physical line and pass through the DID info (same as the
phone co). I know this is the favourite way of routing incoming faxes at
the moment.

Just showing my ignorance.
