More info...
I tried the install on another machine.  Same kernel (2.0.34) from
Slackware 3.5.  Same results.  Modem wedges on sends when I use cuax. 
As soon as I switch it to ttySx, everything works great.

What are do the permissions on your two devices look like?
Could the difference be there or possibly in the /etc/group file?
