flexfax: faxmodem does not add the modem

hylafax on suse 5.3 , exar Class 2 modem

faxstat  does not show  >>> any more <<< : modem - running and idle, that 
means it was working fine for 3 months !!!!

turning on faxgetty i do get running and idle - but nevertheless it does 
not send the fax.

i can acces the modem with cu.

i changed the sendmail configuration - fetchmail , procmail etc... - might 
this be a problem?

the file /var/spool/fax/status/<modem> exists also after turning off 
faxgetty - telling "running and idle" even this is not true. after deleting 
it faxstat reports no more modem

faxmodem does not report any errors

running the server in tracemode I do not see any errors
