flexfax: Garbled communication

Hi all.  This is my first post to the list, and after reading the docs and
FAQs, I haven't been able to figure out my problem.

The fax modem tries to dial out, but about two seconds after connecting,
it immediatly drops the connection.  It starts to negotiate, then receives
some binary garbled data, for no apparent reason.  I've gone thru faxsetup
quite a few times, varying the parameters, to no avail. I'm receiving the
following in my syslog messages:

Sep 21 09:33:18 apps FaxSend[1209]: SEND FAILED: Unspecified Transmit
Phase B error

Hopefully someone has seen this before, as I've spent quite a few hours
working with it now..  This is HylaFAX-4.0pl1-1 RPM for Linux 2.0.31-pre9.
My serial parameters are:

/dev/cua1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
        Baud_base: 57600, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
        Flags: spd_hi skip_test

I have a "USRobotics Sportster V.34+ FAX" and I'm using the following init
strings:

It appears to negotiate ok up to that point, but then just dies.  I was
able to receive a fax, using the same modem from another phone line in my
host, via a Win95 machine.

I'm really looking forward to hearing from someone who may have seen this
before..
