The main reasons for I chose to use HylaFAX is:

    1. It's free.
    2. Quite a few people on the list will help you out if something
        goes wrong.
    3. It appears to have quite a few tweak options to get around quite
a few problems with brandX modems.
    4. The source code is there.
    5. Once it's working, it's rock-solid.

The main drawbacks are:

    1. If your installation doesn't go in smoothly the first time
finding out just what's wrong can be a real bear, unless
you've quite a bit of UNIX knowledge.
    2. It still needs a few more code tweak features to get by some
of the odder fax-machines out there.
    3. Wading thru' the source code can take a bit of getting use to.
