...i had the same problem an a DEC alpha under OSF/1 V4.0A.
-> check the file port.h, created during your ./configure run.
In there is a flag/define for UTMPX...set this from "1" to "0".

-> this should solve the problem by selecting utmp.h instead of utmpx.h
(check that you have a utmp.h available)
