This file contains instructions on how to get started installing HylaFAX from the binary distribution for IRIX. This document is incomplete; the remaining materials are part of the standard documentation that comes with the software. This documentation is included in the distribution proper and on the WWW through the HylaFAX page at http://www.vix.com/hylafax. If you don't have an Internet connection that you can use to read the documentation then install the HTML materials included in the binary distribution to obtain the necessary documentation. There are also pre-formatted versions of these materials available by public FTP from the host ftp.sgi.com in the directory ~ftp/sgi/fax/doc. Installation ------------ This IRIX binary distribution comes as a tar file that contains images for use with the standard Silicon Graphics installation programs inst(1) and swmgr(1). Two separate versions are available: hylafax-irix5-v4.0pl0-inst.tar for use under IRIX 5.3 thru 6.1 hylafax-irix6.2-v4.0pl0-inst.tar for use under IRIX 6.2 and later Note that you cannot use the 6.2 version of the HylaFAX distribution on an IRIX system running an OS version prior to 6.2; don't try it! There is no binary distribution of HylaFAX for versions of IRIX prior to 5.3. The 5.3 distribution of HylaFAX *may* work under IRIX 5.2 but this has *not* been verified (and one should always beware of installing binary executables built under a newer version of the OS). In the same directory where you found the above distributions there is also a separate file that contains a copy of the SGI Freeware distribution of Ghostscript: gs333-irix-inst.tar Ghostscript 3.33 built under 5.3 as ELF executables (works on 6.2) The Ghostscript software is only needed under IRIX 6.2 and only if you do not have Impressario 2.1 and a license for the Adobe PostScript RIP application that is part of Impressario (psrip). To unpack the inst images do something like: hyla% tar xf hylafax-irix5-v4.0pl0-inst.tar This will create a subdirectory with the inst files. Next, run inst or swmgr to install the appropriate packages that you want; e.g. hyla# inst -f hylafax-v4.0pl0 Default distribution to install from: hylafax-v4.0pl0 For help on inst commands, type "help overview". HylaFAX requires the TIFF software for operation; it must be installed to use the HylaFAX client or server software. Under IRIX 6.2 or later it may also be necessary to install Ghostscript for use on a HylaFAX server machine. A copy of Ghostscript from the Silicon Graphics Freeware distribution is available in the same directory where you obtained this software or you can install it from the Freeware CD-ROM (the binary distribution of HylaFAX has been configured to expect Ghostscript installed in the /usr/freeware hierarchy where SGI Freeware goes). Note also that the HylaFAX distribution has separate images for client machines and for server machines: a server machine is a machine that has one or more fax modems on it; a client machine is any machine where facsimile are to be submitted. It is a good idea to install the client support on a server machine. Client machines must install the dps_eoe.sw.dpsfonts package from the standard IRIX distribution to get the font metric files that are used in formatting ASCII text submitted for facsimile transmission. When installing software for a server machine you must install a PostScript RIP, otherwise the fax server will not able to convert PostScript to facsimile for transmission. On IRIX systems that support COFF-style executables (anything prior to 6.2) a Display PostScript-based RIP is provided in hylafax.sw.dpsrip (and is the preferred RIP to use). This package requires that you also install dps_eoe.sw.dps and dps_eoe.sw.dpsfonts from the standard IRIX distribution. Otherwise for IRIX 6.2 users a Ghostscript-based RIP is provided in fw_gs.sw.gs. If dps_eoe.sw.dpsfonts are installed on the system then Ghostscript will use them; otherwise it will use its own fonts that are installed by default. You have two choices: if your system is directly connected to the Internet you can view the documentation online at the main WWW site at http://www.vix.com/hylafax; or you can install the HTML documentation locally by installing the hylafax.html.* images. The HTML documentation is configured for installation in the directories /var/httpd/htdocs/hylafax (documents) and /var/httpd/cgi-bin (CGI scripts); you may need to add symbolic links to these directories if your HTTP server is configured with a different document root (or add entries to the HTTP server's configuration files). Note that if you do not have an HTTP server on the machine where you want to install the HTML materials you can view the documentation locally using your favorite World Wide Web browser; e.g. hyla% netscape /var/httpd/htdocs/hylafax Beware however that if the materials are viewed without an intervening HTTP server then the CGI scripts will not be functional and you will not, for example, be able to follow links to manual pages. What Next? ---------- Once the appropriate materials have been installed; you complete the installation procedure by following the directions in the chapter on setting up a server. This chapter is available locally as: /var/httpd/htdocs/hylafax/setup.html if you install the HTML materials or online at: http://www.vix.com/hylafax/setup.html. IRIX 6.2 vs earlier versions of IRIX ------------------------------------ When installing this distribution under IRIX 6.2 you should beware that because there is no support for running COFF-style executable programs you cannot use the DPS-based PostScript RIP that is distributed for use under earlier versions of IRIX. Instead you must either use a version of Ghostscript or, if you have Impressario 2.1 and a license to use the PostScript RIP that comes with that, then you can use a backend DSO that is designed for use with HylaFAX. The binary distribution for each version of IRIX comes setup to use the appropriate RIP to image PostScript (Ghostscript under IRIX 6.2, otherwise the DPS-based RIP). To use a RIP different from the default configured RIP you must specify the one you want on the command line when running the faxsetup script. For example, under 6.2 if you have Impressario 2.1 installed and you have installed hylafax.sw.imprip then you can specify it should be used by invoking faxsetup as: # faxsetup -with-PS=imp If you fail to specify the correct PostScript imaging package to use and the default package is unsuitable for your system then faxsetup will print a message and terminate. If this happens, just run faxsetup again with the appropriate argument(s). Troubleshooting and Problems ---------------------------- The documentation is extensive and almost certainly has the answer to any question you might have; or it tells you how to obtain the information that you need to deal with a problem. In particular, before asking any questions read the HTML documentation. There is an annotated table of contents and an extensive chapter on troubleshooting problems. The UNIX manual pages have been carefully written and should be consulted for reference questions. If you are overwhelmed by a problem you can ask for help on the flexfax mailing list. Consult the HTML documentation for information on how to join this list and for guidelines on submitting questions. Remember that when asking for help you need to provide enough information for someone to understand your problem. If you ask a vague question or describe a problem instead of providing the exact diagnostic message or a trace log that clearly identifies your problem then you likely will not receive any replies. The troubleshooting chapter of the HTML documentation gives instructions on how to collect the information you need to include in a posting to the mailing list. Author ------ This binary distribution for IRIX was created by Sam Leffler. It is provided as-is and without any warranty or support (read the copyright notice above if you are uncertain what this means).
