hi joea - i looked at bin/faxrcvd again, and perhaps just changing the 
FILETYPE can accomplish what you need:

#
# Permit various types of attachment types: ps, tif, pdf
# Note that non-ASCII filetypes require an encoder.
# pdf requires tiff2ps and tiff2pdf
#
FILETYPE=ps

have you tried changing this to

FILETYPE=pdf

to see what happens?
