Just cut&pasted the script from the website 
(http://hylafax.sourceforge.net/howto/misc/faxmail-mimeconverters.php) 
and there the listing for /usr/local/faxscripts/application/pdf states 
the call for ghostscript across two lines without a '\':

/usr/bin/gs -q -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -r600x800
-sDEVICE=pswrite -sOutputFile=- $1 | /usr/local/faxscripts/filter.pl

Should've looked through what I was copying in the first place before posting to the list, stupid me ~:-|
