Toby,

there are couple of things I can think
of trying (off the top of my head)...

1. Do a "ps -ef |grep fax"
and make sure you don't have multiple copies of hylafax running. If there
are, this issue will arise. I had this 
problem once before...notably after
startup. In my case, I found that I had the respawning set up in /etc/inittab
- but I was also kicking 
off hylafax via the system 5 startup
scripts (in /etc/rc.d/init.d/hylafax).

2. You said you ran a netstat and found
nothing listening on the port....did the port number appear in any form
in the results ? It's possible that the port is not being 
released properly after being closed.

3. You can try editing /etc/services
and altering the port number reserved for hylafax (comment out the original
- that way you can uncomment it and fall back to it). Restart
hylafax and you should be good to go...

I hope the above helps...cos I'm out
of ideas !!

Hi everyone, I recently removed my (old)HylaFAX installation
to try
out 4.2.0rc2 but when I started it, it seems that 4559 is already in
use. I have checked using netstat and other tools right before I
started the new HylaFAX and am positive that nothing's listening to
that port. Anyway, here's a portion of the logfile:
