Re: [hylafax-users] new community site

So, again, from the perspective of a 3rd party with fairly little knowledge of the HylaFAX project but a fair amount of time and involvement in others: You might want to be careful to be sure that, in the case of a traditionally community-governed project, you aren't taking actions for which community guidance would be appropriate without asking for and receiving that guidance first.

I completely understand how easy it would be to misunderstand my intentions.

To understand why I didn't publish my intentions prior to actually doing them you need to understand that I did not want to get caught up in yet another political debate with Darren over the topic. (Believe me, such a debate would have been unaviodable. Darren is very possessive.) To me it was a have-to-do thing, and if I had gotten involved in yet another banter with Darren over the topic it would have just slowed me down, frustrated me more, and given me yet more incentive to truly fork... just to save myself from those horrid threads. As a contributor to this software I simply must be able to do it under a banner that is true to my heart. The website advertisements for iFAX, the chest-thumping on-list and in Bugzilla, the overly-conservative approach to releases... I just could not be happy sitting underneath their shadow any longer.

I do not want a code fork any more than you or anyone else does. In fact, consider that I've probably spent more time supporting and coding on the open-source HylaFAX software than anyone else save Sam Leffler. The last thing that I want to do is to abandon it or do something that would damage it.

On the topic of forking, everyone should clearly understand that every distribution and every customization of HylaFAX is of-itself a type of fork. iFAX has their own "internal" fork. I have my development code, a fork. Lots of people have already forked the code for their own use. The idea behind the Sourceforge site was to have a place where *everyone* could feel free to return those contributions to the community... everyone, including those who refuse to march underneath iFAX's banner.

I hope this helps clarify my intentions. If not, let me know.

Thanks,

Lee.
