What I'm pondering (as how-I'd-do-this, which is not an entirely
hypothetical question) is to use the * box to listen for additional
digits after I'd already taken the call, not to expect them somehow from
the telco.
Support is available for monitoring existing calls for DTMF (IIRC --
though I think it's experimental and known to occasionally be
unreliable), but I'd probably just take the approach of having a
different number assigned for calls which are going to have additional
digits punched before starting the fax transition.
(My personal interest here is potentially being able to do fax-to-email
for employees, and thus identifying for which employee a fax is
targeted, without giving each employee a dedicated fax number as well as
a dedicated voice number or needing to put a few-second delay before
connecting any incoming call to listen for fax tones).
