I need to send not necessarily receive faxes. Other than several months study of Hylafax is there any real difference for a simple

You mean between hylafax and mgetty+sendfax? ("sendfax" is also a hylafax command, so "sendfax vs hylafax" is pretty ambiguous).

There are substantial licensing differences (which probably don't matter to you for personal use); also, HylaFAX is more featureful and comes with configuration files that work around firmware bugs in a wide variety of modems. I started out playing with mgetty+sendfax myself, and it was one of these firmware bugs (which HylaFAX is capable of working around) along with the licensing issues that convinced me to switch.
