Outside the world of Windows, most of what goes on over TCP/IP is 
human-readable.  So why not use a tool like tcpflow or ethereal  {both exist 
as debian packages BTW}  to see what some other, known good application sends 
to the port?  Then you can easily replicate this in your own application  
{assuming that you have already written / shamelessly plagiarised code to 
send data to an arbitrary port, à la netcat}.
