OK I get this error often for specific fax machines.

Logs help. Telling us what happens on the receiving end helps.

Please don't tell me to search the archives as I already have,

Then you would know to give us logs and tell us what happens on the receiving end.

and none of the answers make any sense to me,

I believe that.

other than I believe that this error message is related to faxing standards that Hylafax adheres to strickly and some there has problems with older fax machines.

Strange that you can come up with this conclusion without understanding the responses to this same question in the archives.

In Class 1 HylaFAX has more leverage in being "flexible" with the standards. In Class 2 you're pretty much dependent upon how the modem's firmware implements the fax standards. In Class 1 HylaFAX is designed to be as "flexible" as possible without breaking compatibility with other systems.

I am supporting Hylafax v4.1.7 on Linux. I never installed or configured it, but just got lumbered with it and now people are looking to me to resolve this "No response to MPS or EOP repeated 3 tries" error.

If you're having a problem it's generally best to first look to see if others have had the same problem and follow their steps to resolve it. You seem to have done this, although you appear to have done it half-heartedly. If searching for answers doesn't work, then usually it is wise to upgrade the software to the latest version. Then, if that doesn't work, seek for expert assistence.

Would it help if I upgraded to 4.2.1 is this problem resolved?

Since you read the archives you will know that the problem of "no response to MPS or EOP repeated 3 times" is that the *remote*system* (the receiver) did not respond at all after the image data was sent to it. Now, I suspect there could be numerous things that could cause some receiver to stop responding. So identifying this as a single "this problem" is misleading. You're experiencing "a problem". Yes, maybe upgrading will resolve or work around the problem you're seeing. But "no response to MPS or EOP" is not a single issue that can be resolved with one fix for all. But you know that, surely, since you read the archives. Certainly we can't tell you whether or not some change in HylaFAX since 4.1.7 has fixed the particular issue you're having simpy by telling us "no response to MPS or EOP".

Most likely, if the receiver supports ECM and if you're using Class 1, then upgrading to 4.2.1 will make the problem stop happening - simply because ECM will be used instead by default. If ECM isn't supported by the receiver or if you're not using Class 1, then there's a good chance that you'll still see the same problem occur - although that shouldn't deter you from upgrading.

My managers are already looking to other vendors for a fax solution but surely this is something that can be resolved?

We're mostly HylaFAX fans here, and you know that, which is why saying something like this is done with the intent to motivate a response. But the truth is that we can't control your managers. Furthermore, we can't control whether or not you follow our advice. So, for those of us who have been here long enough to know better than to get excited over whether or not your managers will turn to some other piece of fax software, we just have to say, "Oh well, their loss".

I'd like to see everyone use HylaFAX, but we can only help those who follow directions and do not mislead us. We do not have a magic wand.

Lee.
