I launched faxgetty
/usr/lib/faxgetty /dev/ttyS0 &
and it immediately sent my 3 test faxes.

Is there a convenient way to make sure faxgetty doesn't
answer the phone?

Who am I to complain?  You have solved my problem and I do
appreciate your help.
