What Matt is trying to say is that you probably want to run faxgetty to keep tabs on the modem, which is usually run by putting line(s) like this (1 per modem) in your /etc/inittab file:

mo1:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS4
mo2:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS5

then run "init q" (or reboot) to get the init process to re-read the changed file (then probably restart hylafax and see if it flies).
