[hylafax-users] modem hangs, nonstop RING in logs

I am running Hylafax 4.1.8-1 on Redhat 8, and using an external Courier 
V.Everything serial modem. This server can receive over a hundred faxes 
without incident, however the problem is the modem will hang for no apparent 
reason while answering a call, all that shows up in the logs is continuous 
RING, RING, RING.... nonstop until the server is restarted. This post

from years ago seems to be the same exact problem but was never answered.
