Hi Darren,

Thank you very much.  This solves the mystery.  However, reading the 
complexity between libtiff 3.5.7 and 3.6.1, I wonder what other Debian 
Hylafax users are doing?  If I downgrade libtiff as you suggested, the 
next apt-get upgrade will probably bring back the trouble!
