What about avoiding retries from hylafax? I can set it the retries to 0 I
guess, but then busy numbers will never be tried?

You minimize the amount of time after ATDT before the modem responds 
with NO CARRIER.

Usually there is an S-register in your modem that controls this.  Look 
at your modem manual.
