Hum.

Tried your suggestion. Sent a fax. Got queued. Went out of sendq, still is 
in docq (normal I guess). Faxstat still reports the job. And worst of all, 
/var/spool/fax/log does not show anything but a previous log of a manually 
interupted fax.

Also followed Barney's suggestion on faxsetup and faxaddmodem, then faxmodem 
(or faxgetty in our case)... Still no outgoing faxes.

Where can I look next?
