Hi

Ok, I am pretty sure that this is outside the scope of this list - but
seing
as there are a number of fax experts here and it is related.....

Using hylafax it is possible to route inbound faxes directly to email
addresses given a phone system that passes on the number that was
dialled.
Fair enough. But is there any way of getting it to take an incomming
call -
detect if there is a fax tone. If not then issue a command to the pbx
to
transfer that call to the actual extension?

HylaFAX can, in theory (with perhaps the help of adaptive answer support by your modem), detect what type of call comes in. It cannot, however, do anything other than hand it off to another getty. If you want it to transfer the call (ATDTextension;) then you'll need to code that support.

This may be completely impossible. But it would be nice to just have
ONE DDI
number and the system work out if the incoming call is fax or voice
and
route it accordingly.

There are some disadvantages to adaptive answer that may make this kind of configuration potentially troublesome. (I.e., fax senders may not send fax tones, CNG, until CED, answer tones, are heard.) So be forewarned before spending a lot of effort on it.
