I am having problems evaluating Hylafax for my company's needs.
We have a Linux box running, Debian "woody" with a self compiled
2.4.21 kernel and Debian's Hylafax 4.1.7-0.4 packages. We are
using US Robotics 5868D Faxmodems (circa 2000, v.90 and x2
compatible).

The install of the Hylafax packages went without incident, and
faxaddmodem can communicate and identify the modems over either
serial port, addressed as either /dev/ttyS[01].

It's after that when things break down. The software cannot
initialize the modems when called upon to send a fax. The
log goes something like this ...

Dec 1 12:26:51 comtel-prod HylaFAX[202]: HylaFAX INET Protocol
Server: restarted.

Dec 1 12:26:51 comtel-prod HylaFAX[202]: HylaFAX Old Protocol Server:
restarted.

Not that it matters, but you probably won't need the old protocol.

Dec 1 12:26:51 comtel-prod HylaFAX[202]: HylaFAX SNPP Protocol
Server: restarted.

Likewise, you probably won't need SNPP unless you want to send alpha-numeric pages.

Dec 1 12:26:51 comtel-prod lpd[216]: restarted
Dec 1 12:26:51 comtel-prod FaxGetty[204]: OPEN /dev/ttyS1 HylaFAX
(tm) Version
4.1.7
Dec 1 12:26:51 comtel-prod FaxQueuer[200]: MODEM ttyS1: NUMBER
xxx-xxxx
Dec 1 12:28:00 comtel-prod FaxGetty[204]: /dev/ttyS1: Can not
initialize modem.Dec

You need to set ServerTracing to 0xFFF and try again so that we can see what, exactly, is not working during the initialization.
