I used

rpm -i --nodeps hylafax-4.1.7-1rh9.i386.rpm

and have seen no ill effects at run time, so perhaps the metamail 
dependency is either false, or only crops up when using certain specific 
features of hylafax (FaxDispatch comes to mind).
