The first person (I think) who is an AS/400 tech and
not a linux guy :-). Ok, did you check the file
permissions? I mean, doing this 

cd /var/spool/lpd/filters/
ls -l as400script

You must see this

-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         4999 Sep 15
15:40 as400script

I make the assumption that you are running lpd so no
question to that side for now. To do simple tests,
create a file with only this two lines

#!/bin/sh

cat - > /tmp/as.$$

so you don't need to deal with all the stuff. Let me
know if this works. Cheers.
