I believe I have already checked the firmware revision, but will do so again. Otherwise I'll try Class 1 (had problems using Class 1 with the previous modem, but it was not a very high quality product).

Class 1 functionality generally is not device-dependent with HylaFAX. So please report any Class 1 errors here, and we can generally resolve them.

What are the chances that Class 1 is going to work given that I'm using a USB interface to the modem?

USB interfaces and Class 1 should be fine. USB typically has better throughput than serial anyway.
