Under Linux/X11, the last version of XSane has a "Fax mode", a very simple 
(well, perhaps still TOO simple :)) way to scan images in b/w postscript with 
the right resolution and a button to invoke the "sendfax" command on them. 
Still not perfect but very easy to use.
