Yes, thanks.  That was the problem.  On my inittab it 's the line:

mo:35:respawn:/usr/lib/fax/faxgetty ttyold

I guess "mo" means "modem"  
Since you have a "7", then I suppose that is distro specific.  SuSE in 
my case.
