I currently start faxgetty from the command line with
faxgetty -D /dev/ttyS0

ps auxw shows this.
uucp     16610  0.0  1.6  5664 2064 ?        S    16:30   0:00 faxq
uucp     16614  0.0  1.2  3608 1596 ?        S    16:30   0:00 hfaxd -i hylafax
uucp     16673  0.0  1.5  5572 2008 ?        S    16:31   0:00 faxgetty -D /dev/ttyS0
