Yes, I was talking about rings.

The fax machine is "listenning" the line. I'm not good
on this but I think what is going on is this: when
send the fax, the modem attached to hylafax server
send eletrical "pulses" wich are detected by the fax
machine no matter if is an incomming or outgoing fax.
The remote fax get the call too but your fax pick up
the transmission first (redundant information, I
know). What is strange is why, after you change the
rings to 4 times, the remote doesn't get the
fax...more wait rings than what you set in your fax
machine?
But i'm not the best person to say if you can't share
the line with the fax machine and if is feaseble,
sorry.

Ask how they configured the fax machine.
