Is the modem the same model and manufacturer as the previous one? 
If not, you probably will have problems. You can't just swap out devices 
and expect them to work the same as the ones before. This is the case 
in any operating system.

You might need a new driver for the modem. There is also the 
possibility that this is a Win-modem, which will only work with 
Windows. Your best bet is to get an ISA modem or check to see what 
ones work with Linux and its variants.

Since faxing occurs at only a 14.4 speed anyway, you don't need a new 
modem.

I have seen hardware say on the box that it will work with Linux and 
then have it not work. Don't trust the hardware vendor on this one. This 
happened with a Linksys network card once. I suppose your best bet is 
to ask around here.

I also second the praise for Multitech modems, although I have seen 
issues with Windows 2000 and their modems. Their technical support 
is very good. They are also SCO certified. They seem to understand 
what the words "service" and "support" mean--all too rare with techie 
companies.

Multitech features Lucent chip sets. Lucent is, of course, an offshoot of 
Bell Labs and AT&T. These are the companies that practically invented 
Unix. I would naturally expect them to work well with Linux, BSD, 
Debian, or Unix.
