[hylafax-users] Bad StripOffsets (8, instead of 7)

I received a fax, normally it seemed, and trying to read the file I get:

$ tiffinfo fax21606.tif
fax21606.tif: Warning, incorrect count for field "StripOffsets" (8, 
expecting 7); tag ignored.

How did this happen?  The file is completely unreadable by tiffinfo, 
tiff2ps, etc.
