Which is an invalid response. Unfortunately, somehow this ill behavior
has worked its way into various modems now, including the HCF (Conexant
soft modem) and Motorola Timeports. Many Apples use the Conexant soft
modems and OS X apparently uses Marc Boucher's HCF soft modem driver.
There was a thread on hylafax-devel with Marc regarding this matter
which led to his correction of the flawed behavior in recent releases.
Apparently Apple hasn't updated OS X.

Nope, not a legal response.
Different patches to accomodate for this behavior have been submitted
to hylafax-users and hylafax-devel, but their effect on HylaFAX's
function with other modems is as yet undetermined and their application
seems to be incomplete.
If you're unable to acquire an update from Apple or implement one
yourself for the HCF driver, then you may want to try looking at the
code to patch HylaFAX yourself, or contact HylaFAX commercial support.
