Was the facsimile send to any users uuencoded per mail (faxrecvd) or
copied to another location !?

If not you will have to recover the files from your ext2 filesystem.
You should unmount the partition in question or sooner or later the
blocks the deleted files have allocated will be overwritten.

Use some tools to recover the files. Midnight Commander (mc) has such a
feature. e2fsprogs contains an undelete tool, I think.
Search the web for ext2 and undelete.
